Hangjiao 7 – Super Nova: A Space-Aged Marvel from China
The Hangjiao 7 Super Nova is a spectacular chilli variety born from an extraordinary scientific experiment in 1987, led by visionary Chinese scientist Jiang Xingcun. In a bold effort to combat future food shortages, Xingcun sent vegetable seeds, including chilli, into space. The exposure to zero gravity triggered genetic mutations, giving rise to larger, higher-yielding plants — and among them, the dazzling Super Nova.
This Capsicum annuum variety grows to a modest 50–60 cm in pots, yet it produces massive, twisted pods stretching up to 20 cm in length and 1–1.5 cm in width. The chillies mature from light green to red, showcasing their celestial origins in both form and productivity.
